A system (200) for assessing the performance of an agricultural implement (10) may include a ground engaging tool (54) configured to engage soil within a field as the agricultural implement (10) is moved across the field such that the ground engaging tool (54) creates a field material cloud (154) aft of the ground engaging tool (54) in a direction of travel (14) of the agricultural implement (10). The system may further include a sensor (152) configured to detect a cloud characteristic of the field material cloud (154) and a controller (202) communicatively coupled to the sensor (152). The controller (202) may be configured to monitor data received from the sensor (152) and assess the agricultural operation being performed based at least in part on the cloud characteristic.
