An observation device (22) is proposed for the observation of a vehicle occupant (24) of a vehicle (20) with a recording unit (32) for the recording of light rays, the observation device (22) having a cover (40) with at least one first optical element (42), where the first optical element (42) is one-off with the cover (40) and the cover (40) and the recording unit (32) are so arranged that the light rays emitted by the occupant of the vehicle (24) are steerable through the first optical element (42) towards the recording unit (32).
