Electric railways a n d tramways ; points and switches. -Relates to means for setting the points of the rails and of the overhead conductors automatically, o r by hand. The frog plate A, with the main and branch conductors attached, has a horizontally-movable tongue section B of the rib pivoted at U and two vertically-movable sections shown one behind the other at DF pivoted at EG. The tongue B which directs the trolley to either line has an arm L worked by the cam S or the rack K in opposite directions. The cam S operates after a certain number of vehicles have passed on the main line, as each vehicle lifts the section once and turns the cam disc part of a revolution by ratchet gear P, Q. When the tongue is set for the branch in this way, the trolley then lifts the other arm, and acts through the vertical rack H, pinion J, and rack K to return the tongue B. At the same time, the arm L completes a circuit through the contact and wire M to a solenoid b, which operates the rail points c. A hand-lever f is provided to work the rail points when required, and it also simultaneously moves the conductor frog by the link, lever, and cord g, h, i shown in Fig. 4, or at junctions &c. the points may all be controlled in addition from a master switchboard.
