Stuffing-boxes.-A packing for stuffing-boxes is made by mixing asbestos in fine threads, wax, preferably beeswax, graphite formed into a paste with oil and wax, and a metallic alloy in shredded form either in fine or coarse threads, over which melted wax is previously poured. A small percentage of light oil is preferably added to the beeswax. The alloy may be Babbitt metal, or may consist of 3 parts of aluminium, 3 parts of copper, 42 parts of tin, 3 parts of zinc, and 6 parts of antimony. The packing may be enclosed in soft cloth tubes, and may be moulded into blocks for transport.
