Door-closing apparatus; hinges. -A door is pivoted on the spindle 2A, which has a square or other shaped end 2B and is contained in the casing 1 sunk with its top plate to the level of the floor. The spindle 2A rests in a footstep of the plate 3, its upper portion being supported by a socket plate 4 of the casing. The socket of a spring cage 5 extends upwards through an opening of the plate 3 and its hexagonal or other shaped end 5A engages with a lever 6. A spindle 7 passes through the spring cage socket and bears on the casing 1, its upper hexagonal or like end 7A being connected to a lever 8. On opening the swing door in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, the lever 2, mounted on the spindle 3, moves out of the forked lever 12, pivoted at 13, so that its bottom antifriction bowl 11 in its movement carries with it the lever 6. This rotates the spring cage 5 and operates its contained scroll spring, the ends of which engage with recesses in the spindle 7 and the circumferential plate of the cage, in such a manner that, when the door swings free, it is closed rapidly until the top antifriction bowl 10 of the lever 2 engages with the forked lever 12. This lever operates the check piston 14 of a pivoted cylinder 15 so that the door then closes slowly. By opening the door in the opposite direction, the lever 8 acts similarly to the lever 6. The position of the closed door is adjusted by means of the adjusting-screws 17 of the levers 6, 8.
