Magic - lantern apparatus. - T h e intermittent motion i n apparatus for taking and displaying animated pictures is obtained by using two disks C, D with ratchet teeth arranged i n opposite directions and connected together by the elastic medium E. The disk C is fixed to the spindle c, and rotates continuously. The disk D is freely mounted on the spindle c, and has an intermittent motion through the escapement arms of the pivoted frame F. The free disk is in contact with the sensitive surface, and the photographs are taken during the intervals in which this disk is stationary. The shutter J is pivoted on the spindle c, and is operated by the pin j1 taking into the slot g of the lever arm G fixed to the escapement. As the wedged tooth of the disk C engages one projection f1, the frame F oscillates to bring the opening j in the shutter across the lens opening h. The free disk D, on being released from this projection, is dragged on by the elastic medium E, being again stopped by the projection of the other escapement arm. A flexible but non-extensible connexion e between the disks controls the tension of the elastic medium E. A projection n is adapted to stop the disk D after every complete revolution, to prevent double exposure. Two or more concentric series of pictures may be taken by fitting the lens, to a radially sliding door in the case. When used forviewing or projecting pictures, the shutter is bmitted, and viewing or projecting lenses are adapted in an aperture in the lower half of the casing The disks in this case will be transparent, or will have openings for the passage of light. As a modification, the free disk D may carry a sprocket drum carrying the usual strip kinematographic film.
