In the apparatus described in Specification No. 7003, A.D. 1905, in which increased pressure in the mains raises a bell float carrying the main and pilot burner pipes, which are thereby raised out of a liquid seal, and in which the bell float is held up when the pressure falls, by a link which successively engages cells s of different depths, the bell float r carries two or more main burner pipes b, b1, the lower ends of which are at different levels, so that the burners can be extinguished at different times. To avoid weighting the bell, it is made of small sectional area, and is combined with an auxiliary float n swimming in liquid l which is caused to rise on increased pressure of gas by the gas entering a doublewalled chamber a, k through the pipe w and forcing the liquid through the passage z into the inner chamber k1. The liquid is prevented from rising too high by a valve v connected to a second float n1. The burner pipes b, b1 may be branched to supply several burners each.
