22,642. O'Brien, J., and O'Brien, A. G. Oct. 12. Moulding india-rubber tyres.-To prevent slipping, the treads of pneumatic or solid tyres are moulded with recesses. According to one method, disks b, Fig. 3, of steel or the like coated with rubber solution are placed, before vulcanization, on the surface of the rubber compound of the tyre, and upon the disks are placed conical or other bodies c of vulcanite or the like, smaller than the disks, the parts being held together under pressure by a binder d of wetted fabric &c. During vulcanization, the disks b are forced into the tyre as shown, while the rubber rises up round the bodies c forming recesses aa with rings a1 of hard rubber. After vulcanization, the hard bodies c and the binder d are removed, leaving the disks b embedded in the tyre. A sectional mould which holds the parts together under pressure may be used in place of the binder d. In some cases, the disks b may be dispensed with. In a modification, Fig. 16, cupshaped pieces e of hard rubber or the like are pressed into the tyre in the same way by a binder d and hard bodies c.
