Crucible &c. furnaces.-In regenerative furnaces in which metal to be melted is contained in crucibles or pots, the heating-gases are caused to flow around the pots in an upward and downward direction alternately. The pots d are placed in chambers a, a' separated by a partition wall b, and are supported by a refractory base e formed with a recess e', into which ashes or other material may be placed to form a bed. Gas and air from the regenerator passages f, f1, respectively, are delivered to one of the chambers through ports in or near the bottom, or through outlets h, i formed in the base e ; after passing upwardly through the chamber and over the partition wall, they pass downwardly through the adjoining chamber and escape to the regenerators through outlets in or near the bottom of the chamber. A secondary supply of air or gas, or both, may be delivered to the gases from the partition wall. When the gas is taken directly from the producer, the regenerators are utilized for heating the air only ; when " Mond " or other producer gas is delivered under pressure and at a low temperature, the gas may be heated in separate regenerators or in tubular passages formed in the bases e, or in passages formed in the walls of the furnace or the regenerator chambers. The roof may be formed with removable segments or with covers j1, suitable tackle being provided for lifting the covers and the melting-pots. Any metal spilled at the bottom of a heating-chamber may escape through ports towards which the bottom inclines. The application to a single furnace or to a series of furnaces, where the heating gases pass in an upward and downward direction alternately, is mentioned in the Specification.
