Relates to an apparatus of the type described in Specification No. 10,480, A.D. 1902, for simultaneously charging and discharging gas retorts. The plates are hinged to cross-bars h carried by a stiff or jointed centre bar a and, with the exception of the front plate, swing in sector-like openiugs i in the bar ; the sides of these openings act as stops for the plates. In a modification, the plates are formed in halves so that openings in the centre bar are unnecessary. The bar, before entering the retorts, passes over an apron plate into which the coal falls from a shoot ; the sides of the apron are curved and the outer end is hinged to the main part.
