Improvements in the Manufacture of Artificial Wood, Artificial Wood Boards, Planks and Beams.

13,425. Hengerer, K. June 10. Wood substitutes; wood, treating for preserving.- Relates primarily to an artificial wood which is reinforced by wooden bars or laths. The composition consists of 40 per cent magnesite, 20 per cent sawdust, peat dust, wood shavings, dried vegetable fibre, or the like, 8 to 10 per cent clay, 20 per cent magnesia salt, water glass, or the like dissolved in water, and 10 per cent stone dust. The laths, which are cast in the mass, are first coated with a binding-material composed of 3 parts china, clay, 2 parts magnesite, 2 parts asbestos, 2 parts French red lead, and 1 part lead oxide in oil. The structures are produced by pressing or rolling the reinforced mass. Thick roofing-paper may be cemented to the lower side by the above-described adhesive, and the upper face may be veneered while it is soft. The beams, boards, &c. may be impregnated with tar vapour, or hot fluid tar under pressure.
