Brakes.-In a brake apparatus for tramcars and other vehicles, a system of toggle-levers is placed between the brake shoe and the vehicle in such a manner that the drag of the shoe on the wheel or rail increases the pressure exerted upon the shoe after the brake has been applied. The brake shoe 1 is suspended by springs 3 from the truck frame. A parallelogram of links 5 is pivotally supported from a bracket 9 on the truck frame, the shoe being pivoted to the lower end of the parallelogram, while the intermediate points 11 normally abut against plates or stops 12 and are connected by links 13 to a tumbler lever 14 on a transverse shaft 15. This shaft is suspended from the bracket 9 by a link 16 and is rotated by an arm 17. When the brake is applied, either by turning the shaft 15 or by electrically energizing the shoes, the drag of the shoe on the rail or wheel causes one or other of the points 11 to engage with the corresponding plate 12, and compresses the links laterally so that the links tend to straighten out and increase the brake pressure. The invention may also be applied to brakes acting simultaneously on the wheels and track, or to track brakes having auxiliary track shoes, and the number of the links 5 may be altered if desired.
