Winding-machines.-In gassing or singeing machines a plate or shield c, operated from the stoplever, or independently, is disposed before the slit in the gassing-tube to shield the operative and to prevent too much air from being drawn through the tube by the exhaust. The shield is shown pivoted to a frame a, such as is described in Specification No. 20,026, A.D. 1907, so that when the frame is moved by the quadrant and rack j to withdraw the thread from the gassing-tube, the spring e, attached to the bracket k, rotates the shield about its pivot, as shown in Fig. 4, and when the thread is inserted the shield is retained in front of the tube by the stop l, as shown in Fig. 2. The shield is provided with a sight-plate of glass, wire-gauze, &c.
