Tandem cycles; sociables; driving-mechanism.- In machines provided with trailer or sociable attachments and in tandem and sociable cycles, wherein the rider in the rear or side chair seat is provided with means for assisting in the propulsion of the machine, a lever b is connected by a link c to a chain d, which is counterbalanced and passes round a free-wheel clutch upon the driving-spindle of the cycle. As shown applied to a tandem tricycle, the chain is connected by a flexible connexion f to a weight g adapted to slide within a sleeve g1 upon the frame, a spring h being provided to return the lever to its rearmost position and so to propel the cycle. The mechanism may, however, be duplicated, a second chain being passed round a clutch i upon a spindle carrying a wheel in gear with the driving-mechanism of the machine ; in this case, both chains are connected to the lever and the spring h is dispensed with. By raising or lowering the point of connexion c1, the gear may be varied as desired. Means may be provided for locking the lever against movement when the auxiliary mechanism is not required.
