1489. Reich, T. Jan. 22. Impression surfaces.-In printing on an endless web from an etched or engraved surface, a raised pad or layer is provided on the impression cylinder or other surface corresponding exactly with the engraving, so that any particles of colour left round the edges by the doctors are not transferred on the white borders of the paper, and this raised layer is surrounded by suitable elastic material to make the impression surface even, without making the pressure on the white paper borders sufficiently heavy to transfer remaining particles of colour. The surface may be prepared with partial elevations or depressions to vary the pressure at different parts.
