Armatures, winding; cooling and ventilating.- The equalizing-conductors of a high-speed machine are distributed in a cylindrical form at the back of the armature in proximity to the shaft or spider, and the individual conductors are joined to the main armature winding by means of lugs, which may be secured against centrifugal action by securing them each to an insulated segment as in the usual commutator construction. The armature shaft is enlarged at the centre where it carries the laminations b, and this portion is provided with slots d, Fig. 3, each of which carries a group of conductors in rectangular metal tubes f closed at the top. Where they emerge from the slots d, the conductors, which are arranged in two layers, are spread out into a barrel winding and each conductor passes through one of the slots in the outer enlarged portion of the shaft. The ring 2, Fig. 1, or binding-wire, serves to keep the conductors in place. The ends of the main conductors h are joined to the return conductors t by lugs n, similar to commutator lugs, enlarged at the base and inserted in a wedge-shaped block o insulated from the shaft and secured in place between an inclined shoulder q on the shaft and a ring r pressed by a nut s. The blocks o, insulated from each other like commutator segments, together form a complete ring. The return conductors may further be secured by binding wire or bands between the lugs and the shaft enlargement, or the conductors may pass through the lugs and have binding wires on the outside. The lugs may be joined by strips v to the equalizing-rings w mounted within a recessed ring x secured upon the shaft. In a modification, the segmental blocks o are dispensed with, the lugs are secured to the main conductors and to the equalizing-conductors, and the wire binding upon the main conductors and the ring 2 upon the shaft serve to keep the end connexions from displacement. In this case, the equalizing-rings may be placed beneath the main winding. The slots d for the reception of the equalizing-leads may be formed in the armature laminations, and in the case of an armature provided with a spider, the leads may be formed in the spider. The lugs n may be inclined or curved so as to produce a fan action to ventilate the machine. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that the end plates of the armature are preferably made in two parts, one being the plate proper, and the other, bolted to the first, the cylindrical support for the end connexions.
