Acetylene.-An acetylene-generating apparatus comprises a stationary gas-holder constantly submerged in water, having arranged round it a number of carbide containers, into which water is introduced at the bottom when the pressure of gas in the apparatus is sufficiently low, the carbide containers being connected with the gas-holder by valved pipes leading from their tops. In the form shown, a water tank 1 contains a stationary gas-holder 3 with a gas outlet 4 and gas inlets 6 provided with cocks 7. To these cocks 7 are detachably connected, by screw unions 14, similar cocks 8 arranged on pipes 9 extending from the tops of a number of chambers 10, each of which contains a perforated carbide holder 11 having a perforated bottom 13 for the access of water from the tank. The lime residues fall through the bottoms 13, and through a perforated partition 2 to the bottom of the tank, whence they are removed through a discharge valve (not shown).
