19,028. Justice, P. M., [Osborn, F. C.]. Sept. 10. Cutting-machines for paper.- Relates to paper tube machines in which the tube is formed by winding continuous strips of paper spirally round a fixed mandrel supported at one end, by means of endless belts which take a spiral turn round the mandrel. The tube is advanced along the mandrel by the action of the belts, and is automatically cut into the required lengths as it passes over the free end of the mandrel. The advancing end of the finished tube engages a stop-plate 82 carried by a shaft 81 adjustably connected to a shaft 69, on which is a circular saw 77. The shaft 69 slides through and receives rotary motion from a pulley 85. The saw is thus moved longitudinally against the adjustable tension of a spring 103 at the same rate as the advancing tube. A shaft 74 is rotated by a pulley and friction clutch 86 of any suitable construction, and has cams 72, 73 and pins 89, 90, 180 degrees apart, adapted to engage pivoted dogs 91, 92 respectively, the dogs being held in the paths of the pins by a spring 95. A finger 97, moving longitudinally with the shaft 69, moves the dog 91 to release the pin 89, allowing the shaft 74 to rotate until the pin 90 engages the dog 92. By this rotation the cam 72 acting on an arm 70 of the pivoted frame 67 carrying the saw shaft 69 moves the saw into position to sever the tube 76. With further longitudinal motion of the saw, a finger 99 engages the dog 92, releasing the pin 90 and allowing the shaft 74 to rotate until the pin 89 again engages the dog 91. By this rotation the cam 73 acting on an arm 71 returns the frame 67 to the normal position, the return being aided by a coiled spring 104. The saw 77 and stop 82 are returned longitudinally by the spring 103. Arms 113,114, adjustably mounted on a shaft 108 so as to straddle the tube 76, Fig. 12, act as a stripper to prevent the severed portion of the tube from adhering to the saw. A finger 84 secured to the shaft 81 rides up a cam-plate 105 and so rotates the shaft 81 to swing the stop 82 clear of the end of the severed tube. The position of the saw-frame 54 is adjustable by means of screws, not shown. A spring - actuated belttightening pulley may be used in conjunction with the pulley 86.
