17,544. Lentz, P. July 23. Swimming-appliances. - A swimming-appliance comprises a saddle-sbaped strap 1 having buoys 6, 7 at its ends and shaped so that the swimmer rests upon it and is kept above the water. A tube 4 containing a lead rod 5 is fitted at the lower portion of the apparatus. A tin 8 for provisions and a lamp 9 are provided, the lid of the tin having a compass with a phosphorescent dial fitted to it. Swimming-fins 11 are attached to the feet of the user, and comprise hinged leaves 13, 14 having riblike lugs 16 forming cells to retain a hold on the water. Stops 18 limit the movement of the leaves 13, 14, and the hinges are so arranged that a central passage for the water is formed. Fins, as shown in Fig. 7, may also be grasped in the hands. These have holes 20 to release some of the confined water. The handles of these are loosely mounted so that the fins may automatically feather. When using the apparatus, the swimmer is nearly horizontal.
