Sorting by weighing.-In a machine for auto. matically sorting articles by weighing, a conveyer band 1, Fig. 1, carries each article to a position 3 against an abutment 4. A U-shaped gripper 5 reciprocated on a rail 7 then moves the article on to a scale-pan 9, and a power-driven cam 21, Fig. 2, allows a slide 12 to advance under the influence of a spring 11, the gripper being automatically lifted clear of the article by suitable known mechanism and then returned to the conveyer band to engage the next article. If the article is under weight, a finger 13 on the slide abuts against a resilient pin 14 on the scale-pan, and the article remains on the pan. If, however, the article ie of sufficient weight, the slide 12 passes over the pan and pushes the article into the position 19 in front of a channel 18. The next feed movement of the gripper pushes the article into either the channel 17 or 18 according to its predetermined position, a tail 5e on the gripper holding back the succeeding article on the conveyer band until the return of the gripper.
