125,712. Marks, E. C. R., (Corona Typewriter Co.). April 15, 1918. Folding machines; type-lever actions.-In machines, such as are described in Specification 104,490, in which the platen-carriage and the action are mounted on relatively foldable parts of the framework, the shift-mechanism is mounted on the same part of the framework as the platen-carriage, and the universal bar also is mounted on the same part of the framework as the platen-carriage but independently of the shift mechanism. In the machine shown, a frame part 12, supporting the platen-carriage 50, is pivoted at 13 to a base 11 on which is mounted the action. The character-keys 70 are arranged in banks and are each provided with a vertical stem 32, carried by a pair of levers 28, 29 which are pivoted on the front bar 17 of the base 11. The type-levers 43 are mounted in a segment 45 on the base and are operated by links 41, a few of the outer links at each side being connected to arms on the levers 28 and the remainder of the links being connected to arms 40 on the levers 29. Returning-springs 38 are connected to the levers 28 and a plate 39, the levers having a number of holes for adjusting the springs. Carriage-shift mechanism; shift-key actions.- The carriage 50 is provided with rails 52, 53, running on rails 54, 55 on a shift frame 58 which is trunnioned at 61 to the frame part 12. Shift-key levers 66, 67, of bell-crank form, are pivoted on a boss 68 on the frame part 12 and are formed with cam slots 72, 73 respectively for engaging rollers 64, mounted on a pin on the shift frame. The cam slots 72, 73 respectively are adapted to raise and lower the shift frame, and also to hold it in the normal position. The skift-key levers are normally held in contact with a stop 75 by springs 74a. The shift frame is counterbalanced by a spring 74. Letter-spacing mechanism; space-key actions.- A universal bail 76, pivoted on a rod 78 on the frame part 12, is connected by links 80 to levers 81 which are pivoted to lugs 83 on the shift frame 58. A cross bar 85 at the rear of the levers 81 is provided with an arm 87 for operating an anchor 92 which co-operates with an escapement-wheel 77. The escapement-wheel is mounted on the shift frame and is geared to a rack 98 on the carriage. To permit of movement of the shift frame, the pivotal connexions between the levers 81 and the links 80 are arranged near the trunnions 61 of the shift frame. The character-keys are provided with lugs 79 for engaging a bar 77 on the universal bail. The space-bar 98a is secured to levers 98b which are pivoted on brackets 98x on the base 11 and have pin-and-slot connexions 98c with levers 98d engaging the bar 77. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-(i) The ribbon-spools 105 are mounted on pins 113 secured to brackets 107 on the shift frame 58, each spool being provided with a loose ratchet-wheel 114, Fig. 4, engaging an arm or pawl 116 which is rigidly secured to one of the levers 81. The ratchet-wheels are driven in opposite directions by the pawls, and either ratchet-wheel can be clamped to its spool to reverse the feed, by means of a nut 115. The nut is threaded on a sleeve 112 which is carried by the pin and is formed with a flange for supporting the ratchet-wheel, a washer being placed between the spool and the ratchet-wheel. (ii) The ribbon passes through slotted guides 116a on the brackets 107 and through a vibrator 117 which is secured to the cross bar 85 of the levers 81, operated by the universal bail 76.
