166,984. Hort, E. C. April 27, 1920. Sterilizing milk &c.-Milk, cream, &c. are sterilized by passing superheated steam through them. The milk is contained in a closed vessel i which is enclosed in an autoclave a containing water in its base and heated by a burner h. A valve g in the upper part of the autoclave is open until air is expelled, and is then closed. When a temperature of about 116‹ C. and a pressure of about 20 lb. is obtained in the autoclave, a valve on a pipe m leading from the vessel i to the atmosphere is opened. Steam passes down the pipe k through the milk and escapes by the pipe m. Sugar previously sterilized by steam may be added to the sterilized milk. Condensed milk may be sterilized in the apparatus. Sterile dried milk and butter may be prepared from the sterilized milk. Sterile butter oil may be prepared from sterile butter or may be sterilized after preparation.
