171,074. Slatineanu, E. Nov. 5, 1920, [Convention date]. Addition to 154,213. Gases, treating electrically. - A reaction between a gas and another substance is effected by means of a metal body which is partly within the gas and partly within the other reagent and forms one electrode for a discharge within the gas but wholly outside the other reagent, the metal being one which is capable, under these conditions, of absorbing the gas. This metal may be sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, sodium-potassium alloy, platinum, palladium, or nickel. Platinum black or platinum sponge may be used. In one form of apparatus, a glass bell a fed with hydrogen by a pipe c supports a high-pressure electrode e and dips into a liquid which is to react with the hydrogen. A solid electrode g of alkali metal is partly immersed within the bell. The upper electrode e mav be dispensed with if the corresponding terminal of the current source is earthed. In another form, the glass bell dips into liquid sodium-potassium alloy serving as electrode, and the liquid reagent floats on the alloy outside the bell only. In a third form, the discharge occurs between an inverted platinum &c. bell, dipping in the liquid reagent, and a wire within the platinum bell, the electrodes being enclosed in a glass bell containing the gas.
