Purifiers comprise an inclined rotating drum 2 having scoops 28 longitudinally arranged on the inner wall. The charge is fed into the upper end of the drum and meets the gas in countercurrent; on emerging from the lower end it is recirculated by means of a conveyer. The scoops are so formed that the material falls from them in a uniform shower over the whole of the horizontal crosssection of the drum. This is effected by making them of semi-elliptic cross-section half closed along the minor axis, which is inclined at an angle of 30-40‹ to the radius of the drum.
