228,962. Vickers, Ltd., Lucas, O. D., and Johnson, F. G. L. Sept. 12, 1923. Projectile fuzes.-Relates to fuzes for bombs, depth-charges, and like missiles adapted to be dropped from the air, particularly in operations at sea, in which instantaneous and delay-action firing devices are provided adapted to function according to the nature of the object struck. According to the invention the instantaneous firing device is automatically and positively locked against operation upon the functioning of the delay-action device, to prevent premature explosion at the surface of water. Fig. 1 shows a nose fuze which after being armed by bringing the firing pins E, F into alignment with their respective pellets j, f, and the delay-action has been adjusted, has the striker pin E of the delay-action firing mechanism driven in when water is struck, by fluid pressure acting on the collapsable diaphragm G, H, the cover C being removed during flight. At the same time, the pins K are driven outwards against spring pressure to lock the timing-ring B against movement relatively to the body A of the fuze and to prevent the instantaneous firing pin F from operating on its pellet f. The fuze is armed and the delay adjusted by rotating, by means on the aircraft, a toothed ring c on a two-part cover C on the nose of the fuze. This rotary movement is imparted through a cam surface b2 on the ring B and pin j3 to a carrier J bearing the pellet j and firing pin F, to bring them into alignment with the firing pin E and pellet f respectively. Part of the rotation controls the arming and the Latter part governs the delay. Before release, the pin L is extracted, when the passage of the bomb &c. through the air is free to cause the vanes D to rotate the spindle d and unscrew it until, when just on the point of release the cone d1 wedges apart the two parts of the cover C, which separate and fall leaving the diaphragm G and nose b exposed.
