231,212. Olsen Engine Syndicate, Ltd., and Olsen, S. D. Oct. 26, 1923. Regulating delivery by by-passes and by opening delivery valves; air vessels.-Fuel is supplied under pressure by a single pump to a series of accumulator chambers c and is delivered to the cylinders of an internal combustion engine through small orifices w and mechanically operated valves m, the duration of the opening of which is varied to control the quantity of fuel injected. The pump plunger b1 is actuated by an eccentric e1 on a shaft e, and delivers fuel to the chambers c through a spring pressed delivery valve b4 and a passage a2. The pump has a spring-loaded relief valve b5 in communiction with the pump chamber, which by-passes excess fuel back to the suction pipe when a predetermined pressure has been attained in the chambers c. This pressure may be varied by a screw adjustment for the loading spring of the valve b5. The chambers c are formed with depending bosses j in which are mounted the valves m, and air is imprisoned under pressure above the surface of the fuel to maintain the pressure in the chambers substantially constant. The valves m rest upon flexible diaphragms o, upon the side of which bear tappets t, actuated by cams g on the shaft e, through the intermediary of levers i. These levers i are pivoted at one end to an eccentric shaft h, and contact at the other end with the cams g; the tappets t bear on the middle of the levers, so that by rotation of the eccentric shaft h the duration of opening of the valves m may be varied, in order to control the supply of fuel to the engine. The diaphragms o may be concaved. According to the Provisional Specification, the depending member may be a transverse partition or cross-web.
