232,447. Gresley, H. N. June 16, 1924. Railway locomotives, steam.- In a locomotive having a booster engine supported by the main frame or trailing-truck frame and driving a trailing axle or bogie, the thrusts set up when the booster engine is working are transmitted direct to the main frame or the trailing-truck frame. The booster frame 4 carries cylinders 5 and is supported by bearings 7 on the trailing axle 1 and by a ball-jointed link 8 and a transverse lever from the main frame 15. The axle-boxes 3 are guided in the usual manner to allow radial movement of the axle. Forward extensions 17 of the booster frame carry horizontal pins 20 on which thrust blocks or shoes 16 are pivoted, these blocks bearing against and sliding over rocking shoes 18 carried by a cross-member 19 of the main frame. Each shoes 18 is loosely connected to the member 19 by a vertical bolt-and-slot device 24 the back of the shoe being formed with two semi-cylindrical ridges 27 abutting against corresponding grooves in the cross-member, so that the shoe can rock about either ridge as a pivot. The shoes 16, 18 thus transmit the . booster thrusts direct from the booster frame to the main frame while their sliding and rocking movements permit free movement of the trailing axle in all other directions. Steam is conveyed to the booster cylinders by ball-jointed pipes 29.
