Vacuum apparatus. - A valve. controlling the area of the pipe 1 connecting the vacuum chamber 2 with the induction pipe 3 of an internal-combustion engine is actuated in response to suction by a spring-pressed diaphragm 9 and a partial vacuum is created in a diaphragm chamber 18, the action of the diaphragm 20 and spring 21 being to arrest the flow of liquid from the tank 25 at the end of the suction period as determined by the float 251. A three-way coupling 29 joins the diaphragm chamber, fuel tank and vacuum chamber, the branch to the diaphragm chamber being uppermost and that to the vacuum chamber lowermost. The movements of the diaphragm 20 may register the number of suction periods. An aperture 27 in the chamber 18 is closed by a wad 28 of absorbent material which when compressed by the plate 281 prevents the entry of air but absorbs any liquid fuel collecting in the chamber when the pressure of the plate is released and allows it to evaporate. The diaphragms may be replaced by pistons. The valve controlling the passage 1 has a V-shaped notch 7a, Fig. 2 and an adjustable stop 8 limits the closing movement.
