321,276. Pierpont, F. H., and Lanston Monotype Corporation, Ltd. Sept. 13, 1928. Type-casting machines.-Relates to means for adjusting the matrix relatively to the mould in machines in which the matrix is adapted to be raised from, and lowered on to, the mould. The matrix is operated by a reciprocating plunger C, Fig. 1, having an enlarged head C1, which engages lips or grooves a on the matrix-carrier A. The carrier has two jaws or clips A', A2, Fig. 4, adapted to engage grooves in the opposite sides of the matrix X. The jaw A1 is loosely mounted on a stem A3 which screws into the body of the holder, the jaw being held against a head A4 on the stem by a spring A5. The other jaw A2 is mounted on a stem passing into the stem A3, and is pressed against the matrix by a spring. The jaw A2 can be retracted by means of a head A10, and the position of the matrix is adjusted by rotation of the head A4. The matrix-carrier slides in a guide B, fixed to the top of the mould, and having an open side to accommodate the handle A6, Fig. 3, of the carrier. The carrier is held in contact with an adjustable gauging-plate B2 by a sliding stop or guide B6, which enters a groove in the carrier, and is engaged by a spring-pressed lever B'.
