321,938. Stansfield, E. C. H. Aug. 17, 1928. Counting-apparatus.-A counter for passenger traffic over stairways is operated from two movable treads entirely mechanically, depression of the tread first operated in either direction arming mechanism and subsequent depression of the second tread operating the counter. Air under pressure is admitted to cylinder 1, Figs. 1 and 2, on the actuation of its corresponding tread as an arming tread, and the actuating bar 3 is thus moved to the right, rocking the bell crank lever 5, 6, and lifting the bolt 8 so that its shoulder b is seated in slot d of actuating bar 103, and its stepped portion a is seated in slot f of operating bar 109 its forward edge lying just in front of the nose of dog g. The cylinder 2 is then energized by depression of the actuating tread so that the actuating bar 103 is moved to the right thus moving the operating bar 109 with which the bar 103 is coupled by means of bolt 8 which remains in the lifted position. The movement of the bar 109 rocks a lever h, Fig. 5 in a clockwise direction, and the pawl 13 rotates shaft k one step through the intermediary of a tooth of wheel 14, the operating bar moving freely nearwardly, and the pawl 113 being prevented from dropping out of position by its projecting end. A person moving down the staircase will cause the cylinders 1, 2, to be energized in the reverse order. A spur wheel arranged between the ratchets 14, 114 is in permanent engagement with a wheel fixed to the shaft 22 of the counters, one to show the number of passengers on the top deck of the vehicle, and the other to show the number of vacant seats. A hand operated zeroizing device z, actuated from the treads in a positive sense, is fixed in a detachable manner to the frame of the apparatus and can be used for informing the conductor how many persons have passed up the staircase in a given period.
