377,438. Removing soot from boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and ROUSHAM, E. H., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London. July 29, 1931, No. 21702. [Class 51 (i).] Soot which collects between the baffle 6b and header 4 of a steam boiler is removed by a screw conveyer 7, having right- and left-hand threads 8 and made hollow for the circulation of air for cooling purposes. The conveyer is supported by bearings 10 in the furnace walls and by a central bearing 19 above which are arranged soot-deflecting plates 20. The soot is discharged by the conveyer into shoots 13 provided with rotary valves 14 operated through chain-and-sprocket wheel gearing from the conveyer. Where the furnace is narrow the central bearing 19 may be dispensed with and the screw of the conveyer may be of the same hand throughout. The air for cooling the conveyer is supplied by a fan and after leaving the conveyer is led to the furnace.
