393,234. Type-bar-making machines. TYPOGRAPH GES., 17, Huttenstrasse, Berlin. Feb. 8, 1933, No. 3897. Convention date, May 30, 1932. [Class 100 (iii).] Assembling matrices.-In a type-bar-making machine having matrix bars guided on wires in a circuit, starwheels 3, 3a formed with radially adjustable teeth which project between the guide wires 1 are provided on two vertical shafts 2, situated opposite each other outside the horizontal collecting place A and constantly driven by the machine, so that each released matrix bar 5 arriving at the front of the collecting place is simultaneously seized at several points along its length and pushed in vertical position into the collecting place, whereby jamming or bending of the matrices is avoided. The bottom star-wheel 3a engages the matrix bar at a point as low down as possible but above the type face, and a smaller number of star-wheels 3 than there are guide wires 1 may be provided. The teeth 4 are adjustably mounted in recesses in the wheel rims 11, Fig. 5, on pins 15 which slide in bores 16 in the hubs 14, being pressed outwards by springs 13 until shoulders 12 engage the rims 11. The teeth are bevelled and rounded off and are preferably formed of vulcanized fibre or like material not subject to wear, the remaining parts of the star-wheels being formed of a light metal such as aluminium. The shafts 2 are supported in ball-bearings and one of them is driven by a flexible shaft connected to the drive of the machine, the rotation being transmitted to the second shaft by equal spurwheels 8, 9 secured to the upper ends of the shafts.
