The pour point of lubricating and other oils is reduced by adding a small amount of an organic compound built up of 5 membered rings, or 6 membered rings, or both, and aliphatic side chains containing 10 or more carbon atoms and containing nitrogen or oxygen or both in the side chain or nucleus. Compounds containing one ring have more than one side chain, and compounds containing more than one ring have at least one side chain. Compounds specified are the tri-stearate derivatives of pyrogallol, phlorglucinol, or trioxy-triphenyl methane, the di-stearate compounds of naphthalene, 1 : 5-dioxy - naphthalene, resorcin, rosolic acid, or alizarine, the dimyricyl ether of 1 : 5-dioxy-naphthalene, the cerotic acid ester of cholesterin and the reaction product of stearyl chloride and aluminium chloride with the condensation product of aluminium chloride and naphthalene. The ethers or esters obtained by reacting high molecular alcohols or acids with the phenols formed by treating petroleum sulphonic acids with potassium hydroxide may also be used. The compounds may be added to fuel, tar, shale oils or to crude oil flowing from oil wells whereby deposits of wax are prevented. Samples are furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of lubricating oils containing 0,5 to 1 per cent of the stearyl compound of Bismark brown, the reaction product of stearyl chloride with indigo, or a -thiophene aldehyde diethyl acetal, the tetra stearyl compound of triaminophenol, the distearyl compound of metaphenylene diamine, or of indene, the octa stearyl compound of saccharose, the dioleic acid ester of 1 : 2-hydroxyanthraquinone, naphthalene dioleicamide, and the reaction product of oleyl chloride with the condensation product of naphthalene in the presence of aluminium chloride.
