436,021. Photographic type-composing. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London-(Uhertype Akt.-Ges.; Glarus, Switzerland) May 28, 1934, No. 15894. [Class 98 (i)] Lines of characters that have been set up without justification are justified by photographing each element, word, or letter, separately, and moving the sensitized carrier or the pattern line between each exposure so as to divide the line remainder or deficiency equally between the spaces. A dividing device, preferably of the diagonal scale type, is associated either with the pattern or the sensitized carrier, and may be used either to provide a positive stop or as a sighting means for determining the exposure positions. In the example described with reference to Fig. 1, the pattern line 3 is mounted in a fixed position in a frame 2 in front of a light source 1 and behind a projecting lens 6 and shutter 18. Sliding masks 4, 5 are provided to isolate one word for each exposure. The sensitized carrier is mounted in a dark slide 7b on a frame 7 which also carries a screen 7a and is held in one or other of two positions on a carrier 11, Fig. 2, by a latch 8. The carrier 11 is adjustable vertically in a frame 12 which is in turn adjustable horizontally to provide the traversing movements required for photographing the words in each line and the successive lines. Two coacting stops 17, 17b of which 17b is adjustable, determine the position of the frame 12 for the beginning of each line. The justification of each pattern is obtained by setting the frame 7 so that the screen 7a is in the projection field and so that the first word of the line touches a datum line M. The length L of the justified line is determined by a vertical line on a transparent scale 14 which is slidable vertically on a horizontally adjustable bracket 20. The position of the last word of the line image is indicated by the intersection of horizontal and vertical lines on a transparent scale 16 also sliding on the bracket 20 and adjustable horizontally. On the scale 14 are engraved a number of diagonals dividing a horizontal line equally and numbered in succession starting from the zero vertical line. The scale is moved up until the number of the diagonal corresponding to the number of word spaces in the line passes through the intersection of the lines on the scale 16. The frame 7 is now moved into its second or exposure position, and the position of the line intersections registered by a sighting device 19 which is then fixed. After each exposure, the carrier 12 is moved a distance equal to the horizontal distance between the diagonal lines. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, a positive stop is incorporated in the dividing device. The carrier 33 on which are mounted the screen 30 and dark slide 31 is formed with an extension 43 on which slides a vertical bracket 44 having a series of equally spaced holes 47 for adjustably securing a stop 48. The remainder a of a line is divided by setting the carrier 33 so that the datum line 52 touches the end of the line, moving the stop up to a hole numbered to correspond to the word spaces, and swing- ing a sector 39 carried by the frame 36 about its pivot 38 till a rail 40 mounted thereon contacts with the stop. Thereafter, the stop is moved down one hole after each exposure and the carrier 33 moved back till the stop again touches the rail. In modifications, the dividing device is carried on the pattern line carrier, and, in order to avoid the necessity for displacing the parts during the process of composition, the screen may be disposed permanently out of line with the projecting field and an image of the pattern cast thereon by means of lenses and mirrors.
