[Class 9 (i)] A cartridge for occasional use comprising a case 1, propelling charge 11, and projectile 3 has the projectile fitted with a tail-rod 4 and washer 5 which, during the passage of the projectile through the rifled barrel, can slide with respect to a guide sleeve 7 to compress a wad or wads 6 impregnated with a cleaning and oiling compound such as carborundum mixed with gun oil. The head 3 of the projectile is freely movable in the barrel, but the rear portion of the sleeve 7 is retarded by the rifling to cause the relative movement necessary for compressing the wad or wads. The sleeve is recessed to engage with projections 9 on the neck of the case. A packing wad 10 of cotton wool is placed between the charge 11 and the washer 5.
