[Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] In a machine for twisting axially a wire 12 fed from a reel 35 by feed rolls 7, 8, a chuck 31 grips the end of the wire. A power shaft 5 drives the chuck 31 through gearing 3 and the rolls 7, 8 through gearing 15. The chuck casing is axially moved to close the chuck jaws by a rod 26 connected to a rod 29 operating a clutch 18 for the feed rolls. The wire is fed to the chuck, the chuck is closed and the feed rolls are stopped and the chuck is then rotated to effect twisting. The wire is straightened by balls in a casing 34 and is sheared by a cutter 33.
