501,933. Winding-apparatus. LOGAN, H. H. Sept. 14, 1937, No. 25028. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1936. [Class 78 (v)] In means for controlling the retardation of a mine cage at a predetermined point in its travel by means of a rotary cam, the movements of which correspond with those of the cage, the cam is driven by the cage only during that part of its travel when retardation must be controlled. The cam 200, Fig. 2, is mounted adjustably on a spider 205 which is free on a shaft 209 driven through reduction gearing by the winding drum. An axially extending hub member 206 is secured to the spider, and is formed with a threaded bore 213 which receives a threaded sleeve 207 slidably mounted on and keyed to the shaft 209. A dog 212 on the member 206 is engaged by a similar dog 211 on a flange 215 of the sleeve 207 towards the end of the run and the cam is rotated to effect the required retardation. When hoisting or lowering commences, a'weight connected by a chain to a ring 218 clamped 'on the member 206, rotates the cam and dog 212 until an arm on the ring engages a stop. When this occurs, the sleeve 207 has moved axially a sufficient distance for the dog 211 to pass the dog 212 without interference, and the cam has taken up its initial position for the retarding operation on the return journey of the cage. In a modification, means are provided for rotating the cam to change the limits of travel. A sliding sleeve placed between the shaft 209 and the sleeve 207 has spiral slots formed in it which are engaged by a pin passed through the shaft. The driving feather 210 is mounted in the outer surface of the sliding sleeve. When the sliding sleeve is moved longitudinally, it will rotate the sleeve 207 through a part of a revolution, and if the dogs are engaged, the cam will be moved through the same angular distance.
