[Class 5 (i)] A gastight conical device for protecting trees from caterpillars, insects &c. is mounted on the tree with the aid of a packing-ring and is provided with means for supplying the interior of the cone with gases or vapours for killing or numbing the insects. In the form shown in Fig. 4. the cone a is supplied with vapours from a bottle f having a small tube passing through a packing-ring d of rubber. In some cases, the inner surface of the cone is coated with a mixture of wheel-grease and carbolic acid, or nicotine. The vapour-producing substance may be placed in an inturned rim of the lower part of the cone. When vapours or gases heavier than air are used, the cone h, Fig. 5. mounted with its mouth upwards, is supplied with vapourproducing material, and is protected from rain by a cone'i secured by the aid of a packing-ring d' to the tree.
