[Class 140] Apparatus for coating wires, cables, textile threads, strips and the like with cellulose esters comprises, associated with a bath of the ester solution, a plurality of dies separately mounted in parallel, individually and adjustably clamped at right angles to the direction of travel of the wire. The ester bath may be provided with a horizontal slot in a side wall for the emergence of the wire and the dies may be mounted in a correspondingly slotted trough-like member on the outside of the wall with their apertures in the centre line of the slot and with removable spacing members separating adjacent dies. As shown, within the bath 1 is an agitator wheel 5 driven in the direction of the arrow to cause the solution to heap up immediately above the slot 3 so that the strip 2 is completely surrounded by solution as it enters the die 4. Secured on the outer face of the vessel wall is an angle girder 7 which forms a trough supporting the dies 4, the outer wall of which is provided with a slot 8 corresponding to the slot 3. Bolts 11 in threaded engagement with a bar 12 extending above the trough, bear directly, or through springs, on the dies 4 which may be of metal, glass, ebonite, rubber, or wood, or they may be two-part dies, one part of rubber, the other part metal. The dies may be of rectangular or circular aperture, and advantageously may have flared ends adjacent to the ester bath. Where two-part metal and rubber dies are used the relative positions of the die sections are reversed in adjacent dies. Specification 253,906, [Class 140], is referred to.
