Improvements in or relating to apparatus for regulating the effective output of internal combustion engined vehicles with electric power transmission
618,666. Transmitting mechanical power. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Nov. 11, 1946, No. 33441. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1945. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a supercharged internal-combustion engine 1 driving a vehicle through electric power transmission 2, 3 and having a governor 15 for maintaining the engine speed constant at a value set by a hand wheel 17, the movement of the fuel pump control rod 35 by the governor 15 to increase the fuel supply is limited by a stop 34 adjusted by the wheel 17 and by a second stop 40 positioned by a capsule 43 subject to supercharging pressure. Rotation of the wheel 17 to increase speed sets the governor-loading spring 21 to a higher value and moves the stop 34 through levers 27, 28 to the left to increase the range of adjustment of the control rod 35, the governor moving the rod 35 to the left, when the speed drops due to increased load, until a spring-connection casing 39 contacts the stop 34. The stop 40 is normally held out of the path of movement of the rod 35, but if the drop in speed is such that the supercharging pressure, provided by an exhaustdriven supercharger 44, drops below the safe value for the amount of fuel being injected, the capsule 43 expands, moving the stop 40 to contact rod 35 and reduce the fuel supply. A solenoid 37 is energized on closing of a starting switch 36 to raise a rod 38 and move the stop 34 into a position allowing the rod 35 to be moved into its maximum fuel supply position. The engine 1 drives a main generator 2 feeding traction motors 3, and an auxiliary generator 4, and the wheel 17 controls resistance regulators 12, 7 in the shunt and excitation windings 11, 6 of the generator 2, and a regulator 25 in the field winding of the generator 4. At starting, the auxiliary generator 4, controlled by a voltage regulator 26, is rotated by starting apparatus and on rotation of the wheel 17 to increase speed a contact drum 22 closes terminals 46 to operate a relay 10 to excite the generator 2. The solenoid 37 may be controlled by the relay 10 instead of by the starting switch 36.
