Hydrocarbon oil compositions are obtained by adding organo silicon alcohols of the general formula RnSi(CH2OH)4-n to hydrocarbon oils. R represents a hydrocarbon group and n is from 1 to 3. Specification 630,951, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.ALSO:Polymethane and alkyd type resins are obtained from bis-hydroxymethyl-hydrocarbon substituted silanes. Specification 630,951 is referred to.ALSO:Hydroxymethyl substituted silanes are prepared by subjecting an acyloxymethylsilane of the general formula RnSi(CH2OAc)4-m, wherein R represents a hydrocarbon radical, n is an integer from 1 to 3 and Ac represents an acyl group, to hydrolysis or alcoholysis, e.g. with an aliphatic alcohol or water, to replace the acyloxymethyl substituents with hydroxymethyl substituents. The hydrocarbon group may be an aryl group such as phenyl or alkyl such as methyl or octadecyl. A hydrolysis catalyst, e.g. an acid or base may be employed. The preferred hydrocarbon group is methyl and the preferred acyl group is acetoxy. A number of examples are given. Specification 630,951 is referred to.
