[Class 74 (ii)] In knitting heel portions of a stocking blank integral with the leg and foot, a central group of needles holding instep fabric is idled and the heels knitted on adjacent groups of needles, the newly-formed heel loops being periodically transferred outwards by at least one needle space with the exception of one or two of the most inward thereof, the needles of which are idled, and the heel selvedges being shaped by reducing the number of heel wales, after which all loop holding needles commence to knit the foot. Peaking blades, transfer points or the reducing of yarn carrier travel may be used in shaping the heel. The foot may be fashioned as at 16. The suture 14 may continue to the heel selvedge and linking courses may be introduced. The needles may be progressively idled by the apparatus described in Specifications 576,662 or 619,490, the idling instruments 17 of the type described in Specification 576,662 being attached to bars 20, 20SP1/SP screw-racked by rack-wheels 54, 54SP1/SP and pairs of pawls 52, 521 operated from the main camshaft. Bluffs 59, 59SP1/SP permit one or other of the pawls to be idled.
