In a device for operating hatch covers consisting of a plurality of hingedly interconnected sections, one end section 4 being hinged at 7 to the hatchway and the other, 3 having rollers 6 for movement along the coaming, a traction means such as a rope 8, chain or the like, interconnects or passes over the ends of the adjacent or end sections and is bound on a winch 10, and means are provided for starting the folding movement of the sections and for starting the opposite spreading movement. The means for starting the folding movement consists of a rod, link, lever or the like, 16, positioned substantially plumb to the hinge axis 5 of the adjacent sections and bearing on the traction means 8 (as in Fig. 1) so as to exert a slight thrust thereon when the sections are in their spread position. The means for starting the spreading movement consists of springs 17, 18, registering and co-operating with one another.
