770,781. Cooling water supply systems. YARROW & CO., Ltd., and ANDRE RUBBER CO., Ltd. Sept. 7, 1955 [Sept. 13, 1954], No. 26476/54. Class 113. In a means for controlling the circulation of sea water through the cooling system of a heat exchanger, steam condenser unit 1 or the like of a ship comprising an expansible or inflatable member 8 at the outer surface of the hull adjacent the outlet opening 6 of the system, the member 8 is adapted to be expanded or inflated to project outwardly of the hull to divert the sea water flowing past the hull away from said opening so as to create an area of reduced pressure at the opening. The member 8 in its collapsed or inoperative position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 lies substantially flush with the end of the opening 6 in a compartment 7 adjacent the opening. Liquid or gas may be introduced via an inlet 11 into the compartment 7 to extend the member 8 as desired, depending upon the rate of flow of sea water required through the system, up to the fully extended position 8a. The member 8 is positioned forwardly of the opening 6 so as to divert the flow of sea water when the ship is moving ahead but a similar member may be positioned rearwardly of the opening for use when the ship is moving astern. The compartment 7 is provided with a relief valve 13 to release pressure and ensure partial collapse of the expanded or inflated member 8 and thus avoid damage thereto on striking an obstruction.
