773,278. Combustion chambers, construction of and cooling. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.-GES. Aug. 16, 1955 [Sept. 14, 1954], No. 23586/55. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). A pre-combustion chamber 1 insert 4 is provided with a deflector 6 which deflects the air flowing into the chamber 1 through bores 8 outwardly on to the inner wall of the chamber, the upper end of which is curved to deflect the air downwards in the same direction as the fuel jet injected by a nozzle 3. The deflector 6 forms a conical passage 7 with the inner wall of the insert 4 and is provided with inclined bores 10 to improve mixing and with a bore 11 in line with the injector 3 to facilitate starting. The insert 4 may be formed of two 'parts 4SP1/SP, 4SP11/SP, welded together at 12 and is held in position by a screwed ring 5 having an inner surface which forms a continuation of the conical passage 7. The upper surface of the deflector 6 may be concave or convex and may be covered with a layer of heat-insulating material. Fins may be provided in the passage 7 to conduct heat from the deflector 6 to the outer wall of the insert 4 and the pre-combustion chamber, which may be integral with the cylinder head or fitted separately thereinto, is provided with cooling ribs 14.
