A spheroidal combustion chamber 3, having a tangential inlet 4, is formed with an upper portion A having a mean radius of curvature R 1 which is larger than the radius R 2 of the remaining portion B and the end face 5a of the injector 5 is tangential to the inner wall of the chamber 3. The radius of the chamber may decrease in a continuous manner from the part a to the part b, giving a spiral-shaped wall, but as shown the parts A and B are of constant radii R 1 , R 2 , the centres of curvature C 1 , C 2 , being spaced apart on the axis X-X of the injector 5 which is directed just above the tip b of the passage. The lower part of the chamber is formed in a block 9 which is formed with two circular-eccentrically arranged surfaces 12, 13, to ensure correct location of the chamber and is insulated from the engine block 10 by an asbestos gasket 11. The passage 4 has a lenticular-shaped cross-section.
