A drier composition for use in coating compositions containing drying oils and/or synthetic resins contains as a primary drier a cobalt and/or manganese drier, and a zirconium salt of a monocarboxylic aliphatic acid as a booster drier. The zirconium salt, which may be zirconyl 2-ethyl hexoate or zirconyl n-octoate, replaces up to 60 per cent of the cobalt drier and up to 80 per cent of the manganese drier, both calculated as metals, that would be required if the zirconium salt were omitted. Lead and calcium soaps may be added. The drier composition may be used in paints based on linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil, esters of drying or semi-drying oil fatty acids with polyhydric alcohols, oil-modified alkyd resins which may also be styrenated or phenol-modified, or an oil-modified epoxy resin.ALSO:Synthetic resin coating compositions comprise a drier composition consisting of a cobalt and/or manganese primary drier and a zirconium salt of a monocarboxylic aliphatic acid of a monocarboxylic aliphatic acid as a booster drier. The zirconium salt may be zirconyl n-octoate or zirconyl 2-ethyl hexoate. In examples: (1), (4) and (5) white enamels to be tested consist of a soya oil modified alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, and drier compositions containing the following combinations of metal radicles: lead and coba lead, cobalt and zirconium; lead and zirconium; lead, cobalt and manganese; lead, cobalt, manganese and zirconium; cobalt and manganese; cobalt, manganese and zirconium; cobalt and zirconium; manganese and zirconium; (2) a titanium dioxide pigmented alkyd modified maleic medium oil length oleoresinous varnish is tested with drier compositions containing soaps of lead and coba lead, cobalt and zirconium; lead and manganese; lead, manganese and zirconium; lead, cobalt and manganese; lead, cobalt, manganese and zirconium; (3) a slow-drying white enamel comprising bodied linseed oil, pentaerythritol-modified oleoresinous alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate and mineral spirit is tested with drier compositions containing soaps of lead, cobalt and calcium; lead, cobalt and zirconium; cobalt, and zirconium; (6) a titanium dioxide-pigmented enamel containing a cottonseed oil-modified alkyd resin, a butylated urea-form-aldehyde resin, and xylol is tested with driers consisting of soaps of zirconium alone and of cobalt, manganese and rare earth metal with and without zirconium; the rare earth driers consist of naphthenates of cerium, lanthanum, praesodymium, neodymium, samarium, and trace amounts of calcium, thorium and yttrium; (7) a white enamel containing a phenol-modified medium oil length alkyd resin containing 52 per cent soya oil content, titanium dioxide and solvent naphtha is tested with driers consisting of soaps of cobalt and manganese, with or without zirconium and of zirconium alone; (8) a titanium dioxide-pigmented xylol solution of an epoxy resin that has been reacted with dehydrated castor oil is tested as in (6); (9) a white enamel containing a short linseed oil-modified styrenated alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, pine oil and xylol is tested as in (7).ALSO:Zirconyl n-octoate for use in a paint drier composition may be prepared by a method similar to the method for preparing zirconyl 2-ethyl hexoate described in Specification 781,450.
