782,411. Cloth shearing and raising machines. WHITELEY & SONS, Ltd., W. Aug. 4,1955 [Aug. 4, 1954], No. 22584/54. Class 42 (1). A cloth shearing or raising machine is provided with means for detecting a joint in the cloth, such means being adapted to cause the operation of a delay mechanism which is driven at a speed directly related to the speed of the cloth rollers and is adapted to cause the cutter or raising roller to be moved away from the path of the cloth after a predetermined movement of the mechanism. As shown, the actuating solenoid 27, Fig. 1, of a cutter-moving mechanism as described in Specification 782,412 is adapted to be energized by closure of a switch 49, Fig. 2, carried on a lever 41 pivoted at 40 in a housing 33. The cloth 14, Fig. 1, is jointed so that there is a gap between adjacent piece ends. When a joint passes between a light bulb 30 and a photo-cell 31, the latter gives an electric impulse which causes operation of a solenoid 32, Fig. 2, whereby the end of lever 41 is depressed to bring a worm wheel 43 into engagement with a worm 38 on a shaft 36 continuously driven from the cloth rollers 11-13, Fig. 1. Rotation of worm wheel 43 rotates a face cam 48 fixed thereto until a depression 50 in the cam causes switch 49 to close. An auxiliary switch then cuts out solenoids 32 and 37 so that solenoid 27 is only operated instantaneously and worm wheel 43 is disengaged from worm 38 whereupon cam 48 returns to its zero position under the action of a torsion spring 44. The zero setting of cam 48 is determined by engagement of a stop on the worm wheel with an arm pivoted in the casing 33; the position of the arm can be adjusted by means of a knob so as to vary the delay in operating switch 49.
