785,700. Fireplaces. FINCH & CO., Ltd., B., THROWER, S. E. and BUTLER, J. Oct. 26, 1954 [Oct. 26, 1953], No. 29596/53. Class 126 An adjustable damper in the throat of an open fireplace is so shaped and arranged that its forward surface provides a smooth upward extension of the front surface of the fireback, at least in the position giving the minimum throat area. The damper 13 is formed of refractory concrete or fireclay supported by a metal frame, and is pivotally supported by lugs on the end members of frame engaging recesses in the end walls 19 of a bearer bar 14 built into the sides of the fireplace. Abutments formed on endplates of the damper frame engage shoulders on the bearer ends 19 to limit the movement of the damper. The damper is actuated by lugs 33 on a reciprocating rod 32 engaging a stud 34 formed on one end of the damper frame and the forward position of the damper may be adjusted by a screw 42. The rear surface of the damper 13 forms a downwardly extending part of the rear wall of a smoke chamber and soot trap which is continued upwardly and rearwardly by the heat resistant concrete packing 12 behind the fire back 10. The front wall of the smoke chamber is formed by a hollow metal air-heating chamber 27 and curves smoothly upwards from a bottom semi-circular part at or slightly below the level of the rounded damper top to a rearwardly extending upper part. Air is supplied to the chamber 27 from channels 39 at the sides of the fireplace as described in Specification 785,699 [Group XIII], and the outlet 41 for heated air is hidden by a flange 46 on the cross member of a metal frame 43 surrounding the fireplace opening. The frame 43 gives the fireplace a normal appearance, though the actual height of the front opening between the bottom of the air heater 27 and the top 63 of the fret is reduced to about 9 inches. The fireplace, including the back packing 12 which is enclosed by expanded metal reinforcement, and the metal frame 43 is formed as a unit for insertion in a recess provided with a lintel 48, surround 44 and refractory hearth 11. Asbestos seals 49 are provided between the top of the unit and the lintel 48. and a front fret 55 with an air control door is integral with the frame 43. A grate frame 58 is supported by rear legs and a lip 60 overhanging the fret 55. An extension piece 63 to increase the depth of the fuel bed, is supported by pegs engaging holes in the lip 60. Cast iron linings 65 rest on the grate frame 58, which supports the grate proper. The fireback may be replaced by a boiler resting on a block, which may be removed to give access to a cleaning hole in the bottom of the boiler, which has no rear flue. A removable hood may be arranged to reflect heat back into the fireplace and close the outlet of the air heating chamber if it is desired to heat water without heating the room.
