Improved process and apparatus for coating with powder, containing magnetically conductive particles, a metal wire for use as an arc welding electrode
794,852. Welding by fusion. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE. Dec. 30, 1955 [Dec. 30, 1954], No. 37475/55. Class 83 (4). In automatic arc welding with a continuous metal electrode, the electrode 6 is passed through an orifice 16 in the base 17 of a container 13 holding a powder having a magnetic component, e.g. 50 per cent iron, and the powder is continuously mechanically thrust towards the electrode and forms a coating having the same diameter as the orifice 16 and adhering to the electrode due to the magnetic effect of the welding current. The electrode 6 is fed into the container by feed rollers and drives a pair of rolls 28, 29 geared to a rotor 22 carrying blades 18. The powder is dropped through a tube to a point near the outer ends of the blades 18 which thrust it towards the electrode. The inner ends of the blades 18 coincide with the edge of the orifice 16. The base 17 of the container may slope down towards the orifice 16. Specification 608,270 is referred to.
